I’ve been in a bit of denial that this kid is no longer itty bitty, and needs a functional space to do homework, sleep and recharge. We came up with this plan together, his input being the color of the walls and the striped curtains (which seem to be in all boys’ rooms with navy walls but I’m rolling with it!)

This week I painted the walls SW Naval, a deep, true navy without any strong undertones.
I still need to paint the trim and touch up the walls and bulletin board, but we already love it. I’m a huge sucker for warm wood tones with deep, cool colors (check out Peter’s black and wood room here).
The inlaid wood desktop is working out great for homework.
The pipe legs are temporary until I build a cabinet base, and then they will be repurposed into a shelf (hopefully – I still have to figure that out!)
The room is small, with a teeny tiny closet, and a big part of this challenge is maximizing the space. I have some ideas for storage in this little alcove that I’m excited to share with you!
I was planning to buy these curtains, but then found what we had in mind at Homegoods, such a score!!!! However……
….it turns out one package had tab-top curtains, and the other, grommets, and finding a mate for either package at any Homegoods in a 100 mile radius is proving to be just about impossible. And the stripes don’t line up. And they’re a little on the sheer side. And And And. They need to be hemmed, so I could make the stripe AND grommet issue work, but there are a lot of other projects to attend to in this room, so the jury is still out on these.
I’m also in the midst of changing out all the hinges and doorknobs on the bedrooms and closets AND updating the old, painted over almond outlets and light switches, so I’m spinning a lot of plates at the moment 🙂
My New Year, New Room Hitlist:
Paint the walls and trim • DIY cabinet and pull out laundry hamper for the desk base • DIY shoe storage • Display shelves • Closet makeover that includes hanging clothes storage • Some kind of interesting ginormous art for the huge bulletin board • Lighting • Curtains (maybe?) • and…..A top secret situation with the bed that my boy is going to be very excited about!!!
I cannot tell you how happy I am to do this room for Sean and especially to surprise him with the top secret bed situation! Check back in next week to see this room as it comes together, one DIY at a time.

Love the direction you are going with the room Lisa. Navy and white are a favorite combo of mine for boy’s rooms. Classic. Love the wood topped table. Adds so much warmth and rustic charm.

Thanks so much Lauren! I’m sure this room is going to get even more “rustic” when my 15 year old takes it over again 🙂

Oh man! That’s terrible about the curtains. Who stocks nearly identical but just slightly not so they can’t be used together curtains? That’s so frustrating. I sure hope an easy fix comes you way. You’ve made a ton of progress with those gorgeous walls!
Lisa says
I know Corinna – it’s my own fault for not looking closely at the curtain labels before I bought them! But I’m holding out hope that there is a match out there for one of them!
