Our house sits on a lot with many huge trees. When we first moved here with three young kids and a dog, we had no grassy backyard, just pine trees all the way up to the deck.  We cleared many trees, brought in loam and planted grass to create a great yard for our kids to play in. Eventually I DIYed a pea stone patio with a fire pit and last year we finally replaced the old rotted deck and gave this whole outdoor area a makeover.

A garden border around a pea stone patio includes ornamental grasses, hosta and tiger lilies.

All our DIYs and labor have been so worth it – we love it out here now!

We still have some big projects to tackle in the front of our house but it’s coming along. Here it is when we bought the house…

An 80s colonial in New England slowly gets a facelift.

…and after removing a few of the tall pines, painting it white, adding shutters and replacing all the windows. This year we’re installing a new front door and eventually we will replace the crumbling steps. The to-do list never seems to wane!
