A few weeks ago I mentioned to my family that I might get us all new stockings this year, something simple like these:
{Pottery Barn}
My creatures of habit almost fainted at the thought of me not using the stockings we’ve always used. The kids were horrified to think of me buying plain old white stockings instead of our colorful ones. My husband’s thoughts were along the lines of, “why buy new stockings when we have perfectly good ones we can use?”
They are cute – and I do love the tradition of always using them – but I’m t.i.r.e.d. of decorating with red for Christmas.
So, to keep the tradition of using these needlepoint stockings alive, and to satisfy my need for a little change, I fur-ified them!
This is such an easy and non-commital way to change up your stockings.
I had a little bit of white faux fur left over from another project (something adorable that Mark made in high school wood shop many years ago – I have to show you!) I cut the fur into strips, and plugged in the trusty glue gun for this quick and easy project.
I threw some hot glue on the back of the stocking and just wrapped the strip around it, allowing a header of about 2″ on the top, then ran a bead of hot glue along the inside of the stocking and folded over the fur.
I didn’t want to destroy the red velvet on the front of the stocking, in the event that I change my mind and want red back in my Christmas decor in future years, so on the front, I just added one dot of hot glue to the top of the embroidery to adhere the fur.
I also cut a little strip of fur that I folded over and glued inside the stocking for hanging.
Same stockings = family is happy. Fur-ified = mom is happy!
I hung initial ornaments we already had (these glitter ones are from Target’s dollar section).
Beware – fur fabric sheds more than this guy…..
and the hot glue gets everywhere – but the fur is very forgiving – you can pull bits of glue off of it and mess up the fur to hide imperfections.
I am already thinking about what else in this house I can fur-ify!!
Hope you have a happy day!

Lisa, I have the exact same story at my house. I'm sick of our stockings (and they look particularly awful with the tile of our fireplace) but the kids are dying at the idea of me getting new ones. Love your idea of updating the old ones!!

Super cute Lisa! I'm with you on the red. We have a tree that I usually decorate with red and gold and I'm so over it. Unfortunately don't want to spend a ton on a treeful of new ornaments. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

Oh silly family, don't they know change is good?! ha! Glad you figured out a win/win solution. Cute!

You are SO smart!! Ours look exactly the same – unfur-ified!! I'm sick of them too, and thought I'd wait until a few days before Christmas to hang them. I love your big guy, thanks for the fix! 🙂

I love the traditional stockings 🙂 But that's because I'm cross stitching my families stockings right now. I'm down to 1 1/2 left…probably won't be done by this Christmas though.
The fur is an awesome addition, I think I might consider.
