Paper Peony Roses

To delight you all year through!

My all-time favorite flower is the Peony Rose. By June my perennial gardens will be brimming with their enormous blooms in white, pale pink, medium pink and dark pink. I won’t have enough vases for all the blossoms I’ll cut before the weight of the blooms bring them to the ground…..it’s the most splendid time of year, Peony season.

How happy I was to discover that our dyed coffee filters create beautiful Peony-like paper flowers! If I had more red dye I would have made a bunch of pink-dyed filters into a bouquet for when the real Peonies are not in bloom – 11 and half months of the year! Alas, I had enough for one pink beauty and bequeathed the other colors to Hannah and her lovely friend Lucy for some Easter flower-making fun. (A while back I happened upon a great video tutorial on making coffee filter flowers at the wonderful blog Rhonna Designs, and tucked this little morsel away for a rainy day. My flowers are an adaptation of Rhonna’s.)

Here’s how to make your own blooms.

Start with dying coffee filters as shown in yesterday’s post.

Take a filter and grab it by the center……
bunching it up so the edges are even. Staple the base.
Make 10-12 of these bunched filters. Reserve one for the outside of your flower.
Starting in the center of the reserved filter, place a dab of hot glue and afix one bunched filter.
Repeat with the remaining filters, working in a circle in the center of your base filter. When they are all in there, add a strip of glue to the scrunched filters and press the base filter up against it . Hold the flower tightly for a few moments until the glue hardens.
Where the outer filter is loose, add a dab of glue and hold it all together until you have a cohesive little unit. Finally, spread the inner filters to fill out the flower. Push a long pipecleaner into the bottom of the flower and afix with the glue gun.

    These flowers looks beautiful! I love the real peonies…I do not think they grow well where I live (boo hoo!)…so coffee filter peonies it is!
