Happy Friday friends!!
Tonight my oldest, Peter, is going to the prom with his girlfriend. As a little pre-prom party I posted this photo circa 1989 on Facebook last night and asked friends and family to entertain me with their own prom photos, and let me just say it’s been a pure delight reliving big hair, big bows, and big puffy sleeves!!!
My hair is actually relatively tame in this photo, but WOW could I get some height when I wanted to! Seriously, what other era was funnier to look back on than the late eighties?????? I am so fired up once again to have a big 80s party this summer ! (I still have this dress and a couple other sweet numbers if anyone wants to borrow them!)
Okay now that you’ve had a good laugh let’s talk books. Today is the second in a new monthly series, and since Mother’s Day is right around the corner and I am always struggling to come up with some new ideas besides flowers and fun jewelry, I thought I’d throw out some titles that some of the special ladies in your life might enjoy. Last month I mentioned the author Marisa de los Santos, whose books Loved Walked In and Belong To Me slayed me. On our trip to Mexico I devoured her newest book, The Precious One, and I’m betting your mom would love this for easy breezy summer beach reading.
Ann Pratchett’s Bel Canto is fantastic, and her book State of Wonder is on my reading list.
If I Live To Be 100 by Neenah Ellis is a poignant, beautiful and sometimes funny must-read for everyone, no matter what genre you enjoy!
If your mom or mom-in-law loves gardening and nature, she might enjoy this gem that my mom gave me (and Suzanne from Privet & Holly chose her blog name from!); a reproduction of a naturalist’s journal from 1906 with drawings and handwritten descriptions of her findings. I would frame some of the pages if I could bear to cut them out of the book. The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden.
For those moms that love interior design as much as you do: Patina Farm and Patina Style by Brooke & Steve Gannetti from Velvet & Linen. I would personally LOVE either one of these beautiful books (hint hint people that call me mother!!!!!)
If you have any recommendations of favorite books by all means, please share! Have a great weekend ahead lovelies.

I loved Bel Canto! I need to read more of Ann Pachett. I recently finished Rob Lowe’s autobiography, Stories I Only Tell My Friends. Loved it! He is a great writer and the book was so entertaining, especially since I grew up in the 80s and followed his career all along. (And you obviously grew up in the 80’s as well! You look adorable by that way in your prom dress!) I am currently reading The Girl in the Glass by Susan Meissner and am really enjoying it. I have read a couple of her books and LOVED them! I also recently read Kristy Woodson Harvey’s new book, Lies and Other Acts of Love and highly recommend it! I think I loved that one even more than her first! Looks like you have read some good ones – I am putting a few on my list. Enjoy your weekend!

I can’t wait to read Kristy’s new book, Shelley! Rob Lowe – interesting. I had read a short bit he did on his son going to college and it was quite moving. I didn’t know he had an autobiography out. I’ll check it out – thanks for sharing!

We are both 80’s gals!!! We must have kept Aqua Net in business. 🙂 Thanks for these wonderful reading recommendations. I’m always looking for good books. P.S. You still look the same; just a new hairdo. 🙂

That is very kind of you to say, Carol, but I’ve gained a few sweet wrinkles since then!! 🙂

I LOVEEEEE THIS!!!!! Some friends and I were texting funny photos of ourselves from back in the day and we were just dying over how cool we thought the fashions were at the time vs. how they looked today. I had so many awkward school photos it’s not even fair 😀 Books – going to add these to my list this summer. I’m currently reading Lies and Other Acts of Love by Kristy Woodson Harvey, and am really enjoying it!

Shelley I would love to see some of those photos with questionable fashion choices. I think we need to have a blog party along those lines!!! I am dying to ready Kristy’s new book!
