It’s the halfway point of the ORC and this is basically how I feel about myself and my decision to participate in this 6 week room makeover bootcamp, whilst attending to client projects and oh you know, keeping my family alive with food and whatnot.
If you’re new here I am making over my 17 year old’s crazy-town of a room, going in this general direction:
Bamboo shades, repurposed from my living room, have been hung.
We have replacement windows that take up the interior of the window trim, so I couldn’t truly inside mount, but the “faux inside mount” works for me, especially since the shades are about 1/8″ too big to fit inside the trim anyway. The best part is that I didn’t have to spend any $$$. Woohoo!!
Speaking of $$$ for the makeover, this week I sold Peter’s existing dresser and bookcase to fund this project and make room for furniture that better fits the space.
I really loved the idea of the plumbing pipe rustic shelving (that wood and metal combo, so masculine and mighty right???) but after figuring out what I would need, pricing it all out ($300+), and thinking about the many steps involved for my particular needs, I just wasn’t feeling it anymore.
I walked out of the hardware store feeling like someone had let the air out of my footballs
(NOT TOM BRADY, obvi)
but then I remembered a smart Ikea hack that I first spied on Apartment Therapy,
so I went with plan B for the built in shelves.
The galvanized metal Hyllis shelving units from Ikea
PLUS
some delicious stained wood……once I mulled over stain options.
2 // Rehab new short-and-long dresser.
3 // DIY a headboard.
4 // Build wall of shelves for storage and photo/art display.
5 // Install a picture ledge around room.
6 // DIY storage bins.
7 // Address the lighting.
8 // Figure out the desk area.
9 // The big surprise art project.
10 // Chalkboard wall fun.
11 // New bedding.
12 // And hopefully by November 12, a happy client!

First of all – love that t-shirt! I think my boys would love it too. Secondly, I think you can turn that dresser into something awesome! Lucky you selling your old one already – I thought I had a buyer, but alas, not. Back to the drawing board!

Things are moving along Lisa and I love the direction you are going in…love that t-shirt too. Just hilarious! I remember being at that crazy point the one time I did the One Room Challenge. I would have loved to participate this time but now that I am sick with a sore throat and barely any voice, I am glad to just watch every one else create! Good luck this week!

Your entire intro cracked me up!!! So nice to find the humor in this "bootcamp" of a process. 🙂 Love the stained wood! Can't wait to see what you do with the shelving and dresser. Good luck this week!

The shades look so good with the dark paint color, also great idea for your shelves! The dresser will turn out great I'm sure, looking forward to seeing what you do.

Progress it all is, and all going in a great direction I see! I can't wait to see that IKEA hack built in your making as well as the dresser makeover, you look cute btw for someone staining something 😉 Can't wait to see what's gonna happen next in this room saga!

Loving the look of your shelving!

I am feeling the love/hate relationship with the ORC this week too! What is it about the halfway point that makes you wonder if you really were crazy to take this project on?? I love that you added paint to the list so you could cross it off!! Ha! Sounds like something I would do! Can't wait to see how those shelves turn out! Keep up the good work – you got this!!
The Divine Living Space says
This is SPOT on! Loving the direction you are going! I too was considering the plumbing shelving, but it is NOT cheap, so I am adding some industrial flare on the lighting instead! I love what you said in the beginning. I too am feeling the exhaustion from all these projects around here! Wish people could bring us meals. Hahaaaa!

Why is stained wood so pretty?! I have total faith in you that you will bring everything together in the end. We're halfway there…we can do it!
Katie @ Team Skelley says
I admire your commitment and know that it will be an awesome space when it is done. I know how daunting it is, to be honest, Cooper's bedroom has hand me down furniture that we bought for our bedroom when we first started dating 14 years ago! And it looks it. Boys rooms are always challenging but I like where you are headed!
Mountain Mama says
Doesn't it always seem that as we cross one thing off the list in a reno project five more things get added? I can't wait to see the end result!
Cassie @ Primitive & Proper says
oh that bedding is exactly what i need for sawyer- need to go to ikea! thanks for the tip! and i love the direction so far!
Betsy Dambrosia says
Did you say "CRAZY TOWN" in your post??!!!! Laughing so hard right now
Stacey says
I love the direction you are going with this room! Don't blame you for walking away from the expensive plumbing pipe. Your hack will be great.

LOVE that T-shirt – I need that. With all that you've got going on, you're still making some major progress! I had no clue that the pipe shelves would be that much $$$ – good call on the IKEA hack. And love how those shades look! You've got this!!

I have never stained wood, but looks like all your hard work is paying off! I love that despite your setbacks you're moving forward with plan B and with humor! I love Christine Dovey and her IKEA Hack dresser! Thank you for the quote, because I have to say I often feel this way! Let's do this! XOXO, Sarah
