A couple of years ago, inspired by a post by my friend Andrea at Oak Ridge Revival, I blogged about a little area of my home that was far from perfect but that I really enjoyed.
It was a little corner of my living room where the light always streams in and every once in a while I would pass by it or look up from my laptop and just enjoy the view. There was really nothing special about it from a design point of view, but I enjoyed that little spot.
When your home is your canvas, when you are a serial remodeler and redecorator, when you write a blog about DIY home projects, well, you can kind of forget to be content with your house EVER.
We moved into our house, a diamond-in-the-rough, over 5 years ago with big intentions of ripping out walls and adding new trim and and making this house shine. We got sidetracked with the decision to send our high school-bound kiddos to private schools, and by the desire to go on adventures with them, and by necessary but unfun house projects like new windows that stole all the funds from the delicious renovation projects.
And so there are lots of house dreams still in the making half a decade later. The kitchen is still sporting bologna-colored counter tops and linoleum flooring with seams that are coming undone (even though I keep eluding to a big renovation that is happening someday soon-ish).
A roof over our heads, all the clean water we could ever want, food in the fridge and pantry, and a healthy family…..we are abundantly blessed.
I feel grateful for it all, but I forget to enjoy the pretty parts of our home because I’m always thinking about the next thing I want to tackle (and because I spend too much time looking at beautiful homes on Pinterest/Instagram/blogs ๐ ). Can you relate?
I’m on a mission to look at my house with new eyes!!
This spot in my kitchen – I LOVE IT!
The morning after we put our sweet pup Bruschi down, the first thought I had when I awoke was how sad it was going to be to walk into the kitchen and see his spot empty. Before I even put the coffee pot on that morning, I shopped the house for chairs and a table to make a little seating area where Bruschi’s bed once was. It will always be his spot, and now it’s become everyone’s favorite seat in the house.
It was supposed to be temporary – our kitchen plans included a built in on this wall – but we love it so much that we’re going to keep it a casual little seating area. I’ll probably replace the chairs and add a rug, but this corner of our home is here to stay.
It’s one of my favorite spots because I have company when I am making dinner or folding laundry – tired Mark in his suit after work, or one of my kids talking about their day at school. It’s the spot my mom lands in when she walks through the door…..where kids hang out when they visit our house…..where even on the dreariest of days there is natural light streaming through the sliders.
I love the view of our backyard with the birdies, the kids throwing a football,
and the blue of the sky.
I love the happy pictures on the gallery wall.
I love the stack of books I have on the side table, waiting for 5 minutes of quiet.
There is nothing finished or intentional or perfect about this little seating area except for the fact that it’s a cheery, cozy little part of our home!
Guess what??
After thinking about this for the longest time, I’m so excited to tell you that
in celebration of the beautiful parts of our real, genuine, imperfectly perfect homes,
every week I’m going to share favorite corners of home
from all over the blog and Insta-world!
Kicking off this new series next Monday is the lovely Brenna from Domestic Charm,
I can’t wait to share a spot from her beautiful home with you!

This is terrific – what a great idea! Let's face it, none of our homes are ever completely finished and certainly they are not perfect. But we are so blessed to have our homes and families and I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

This is such a great idea for a new series on your blog. We are all so truly blessed to live comfortably in our homes. Sometimes images on Pinterest cloud our minds, but your new series will be a great reminder.
