on Friday nights from 5-7 (that’s Roche Bros. for my local yokels!)
Using the excuse of our house being on the market and needing to look it’s best,
I have been picking up a bunch of whatever flowers are on sale every week.
I absolutely love how long the Alstromeria last,
plus the variety of colors they come in…
white, light and dark pink, red…
I can’t wait until the perennial garden has some blooms to cut and bring into the house,
but until then, how full of cheer it is to have pretty,
non-odiferous flowers in your living areas!
I bought a humungous bouquet of these white Alstromeria
at Rochie’s last week for $9.99, filling 3 vases,
and even placed a couple of flowers in the bathroom
even though we’re not expecting company,
just for me…
to serve as a little pick-me-up when I’m wiping chocolatey fingerprints off the faucet
for the millionth time.
Yes – I agree – I’m so blessed to have those fingerprints to wipe!
Here are some tips to keep your cut flowers
fresh and lovely longer:
Use plain, lukewarm water for most cut flowers; bulb flowers such as daffodils and tulips should be placed in cold water. Change the water every other day to ward off bacterial growth which can shorten the life of your flowers.
Packets that often come with bouquets include sugar as food, acid that helps the sugar be absorbed by the stem, and an antibacterial agent. If your flowers did not come with a food packet, add about a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the water for a standard vase.
Trim ends on an angle so more cut stem is exposed the the water. Make sure to remove all leaves that are below the water line.
Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Daffodils give off a compound that is toxic to other flowers, so you may consider placing them in a vase by themselves.
Fruit releases a gas that causes flowers to age faster, so place your fruitbowl away from the flowers.

Jenefier, my idea of flower arranging is to cut the stems and put them in a vase – so crafty of me! I'm a simple girl!

Hi Lisa,
It's nice to meet you here — love your flower arrangements, especially the one in the tall vase. I have a vase of flowers on my bedside table — something about fresh flowers makes me happy.
Thanks for visiting my blog. It was fun to pop over here…I used to live in Massachusetts (Western MA). That cute Cottage restaurant looks so fun!
