While I’ve been working away over at my mom’s house, helping her get it market-ready, I’ve also been slowly changing out the hardware on the doors around our house. You may recall when we spruced up our kitchen there was a lot of old, painted-on, scratched brassy gold in this house.
Our freshly painted interiors with this tired hardware was like a beautiful Vera Wang wedding dress paired with dirty, torn, smelly sneakers!
Since we went with brushed nickel for hardware in the kitchen,
we decided to go with this finish for the rest of the hardware around the house too.
After hearing from friends that the really inexpensive doorknobs dent easily, I scoured ebay and the world wide web for good deals on mid-grade knobs. I settled on the Kwikset Cameron knobs in brushed satin nickel that are around $14/ each set for a passage (non-locking) door. By stalking ebay I found a couple lots of knobs for even less, with free shipping.
So far I have changed out all the doorknobs on the first floor, with matching ones in the new basement space, and I have to say that to me, this small change has done worlds to make our house feel less 80s-era. Between the painted trim and the change of hardware the space feels so much fresher, don’t you think?
However, changing out all the hardware isn’t cheap, and since it’s purely cosmetic and we’ve had bigger fish to fry (like having the basement finished), we have been taking our time with it. Now that all the regular doors on the first floor are done, we started shopping around for a new front door knob set as well as one for our slider.
HOLY STICKER SHOCK!!
Any guesses on how much it would be to replace our perfectly functioning Anderson patio door hardware with the brushed nickel version????
That would be $184. Ouchie. Who thought it would be a good idea to change out the hardware again??
And then there’s the front door hardware which, I’ll be honest, I don’t love the style of. Take a little guesstimate on how much an upgrade would be.
That would be $199 on sale (regularly $301!) While I would like to upgrade to a nicer front door handle eventually, it’s not exactly urgent.
So what’s a DIY-kind of girl to do? Oh, you know the answer.
$7 in spraypaint vs. almost $400 in new hardware…….yeah baby, that’s what I’m talking about!
More on changing out the hardware later…..now I’m off to work on an extreme makeover at mum’s house. Want a sneak peak at the gorgeous before?
I know – it’s a beaut!! Don’t be jealous!
Happy day all,
