Snuggling under a furry blanket in front of a fire. The first sip of a steaming cup of coffee. Feeling the crisp winter air on your face. Fleecy, warm socks.
I feel like I should bust out some Julie Andrews’
these are a few of my favorite things
right now!!!
WELCOME TO OUR
Have you ever heard the term hygge before?
The New Yorker deemed 2016 The Year of Hygge; The New York Times told us to forget Marie Kondo because hygge is where it’s at; Country Living published a guide for all things hygge; and the hashtag #hygge currently has 2,917,112 posts on Instagram. I’ve been doing hygge all along and never even knew it had a name!
HYGGE: A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being; regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture. – Oxford Dictionary
Hygge – read as: hue-gah. It’s a noun. It’s a verb. It’s an adjective. And it’s a culture of coziness, connection and appreciating the small moments in life.
My beautiful friend Jessica of Honey n Hydrangea had the wonderful idea to put together a blog tour to share a bit of hygge in our homes and I couldn’t be more thrilled to join in with some simple ways we HYGGE OUR HOME!
While I didn’t know the term until recently, I am intimately familiar with the concept – creating a cozy and welcoming home is always my goal, and finding contentment and joy in simple pleasures, my way of living – something I hope to impart to my kids.
Most mornings when the kids go off to school, before I start work, I pour a cup of coffee and sit by the window in our kitchen for a moment.
Sometimes I’ll see a few deer out back, or a cardinal. It’s a small routine I so enjoy and I’ve noticed my daughter has been making herself a cup of tea after school and sitting in this same spot for a bit.
My family lives in Massachusetts, known for our celebrated spring, summer and fall and never.ending winters. We have fires on average probably 3 times a week from the fall all the way through to spring, and there is nothing cozier than everyone snuggled into our little family room, with a fire burning, a glass of red wine, and the Voice on tv (despite the fact that a tv is decidedly NOT hygge!) That’s just about my favorite situation right there.
I refused to put a tv in our living room because I wanted a space that everyone could hang out in…
play cards or Scrabble, (eat jellybeans),
read (okay that’s just me) or actually have a conversation with each other (we have three teenagers – encouraging everyone to put the electronics down and actually have conversations is big around here these days!!)
When dusk settles in in the early afternoon, we turn the lights on,
light all the candles (total pyromaniac over here, you too?)
light a fire, throw some more layers on – and appreciate our warm and cozy home with all it’s imperfections and projects yet to be done.
Tell me your favorite ways to make your home warm and cozy and hygge, I would love to hear!
