Yes you read that right!! At long last, I’m back to share the bathroom I took on for the Spring One Room Challenge!
The grand finale of the ORC was May 11 but I hit a snag in my timeline when my floor tile was delayed indefinitely AND we ran into some plumbing issues that were way beyond my skill level. No big deal!! ? I’m happy to report everything is fixed, the floor is finished and our bathroom remodel is finito!
And oh my gosh my friends……I’m so excited to share this little room with you!!
My wish list: update the laminate floor, replace the almond toilet, and add a little character to the walls. Mark’s wishlist: possibly a new vanity and countertop.
Here’s the design that emerged within the first few weeks of the ORC:

Before I show you how it all came out, let me refresh your memory on my starting point…….the peach party on the left is when we bought the house 7 years ago. I promptly slapped some paint all over that beauty and moved on to other rooms in need of de-peaching (literally every room).
See all the door hinges in the mirror? The former owner had a dutch door installed. Because it’s nice to be able to talk to your family when you’re using the bathroom.
This is the bathroom that all our guests use, and I spend approximately half my life in since the washer and dryer are hidden behind bifold doors in here, and it had ZERO personality. It was time for some lovin!
The marble tiled floor, wall treatment, crown moulding, vanity rehab, shell mirror and eons of grunt work were all a labor of love by yours truly, but I couldn’t be happier to have tackled this space.
Here is our coastal-inspired bathroom today!
Kelly Witmer’s watercolor print βOcean Landscapeβ
I continued the board-and-batten style that I’ve already installed in our foyer and stairs into the bathroom. I’ll share a post about how that went down later on. Bringing the battens up to the ceiling and adding crown moulding made the room feel so much taller.
The battens were spaced to accommodate our beautiful new WHITE toilet graciously provided for this remodel by American Standard.
I mentioned this in a previous post, but it bears repeating that this little number is self-cleaning, a feature I never heard about before but one that makes such perfect sense. Why is every single toilet not self cleaning?!!!! Especially in this house with three teenagers and an endless stream of their friends visiting?!! The toilet still has to be cleaned manually of course, but in between, especially when we have a houseful or life is busy, I have been LOVING this little feature. So smart and Jane Jetson-esque, right?
The vanity is original to the house (32 years old) but it’s solid oak and not horrible looking. We decided to keep it, and plan to replace the sink and countertop when we put in new kitchen counters (fingers crossed there will be a remnant we can use). For the time being the ivory countertop is great, I’m not complaining! Have you see my current kitchen countertops?
Benjamin Moore Gentleman’s Gray…..the most misnamed paint color in all the world……it’s hard to get a photo that does it justice. The color sometimes reads teal, sometimes completely navy, depending on the time of day (and no hint of gray whatsoever). I painted our bedroom this color a few years ago and I STILL love it – that is saying a lot about a paint color, when I can commit to it for years and use it in other rooms of our house!
Instead of just slapping another coat of paint on the vanity like I have in the past, this time I took the doors and drawers out, scraped and sanded everything, puttied little knicks and holes, and replaced the old corroded hinges with concealed hinges.
Before I just had knobs on the drawers, but this time around I drilled holes and added knobs to the doors and the faux-drawer panel in front of the sink as well. These mercury glass knobs were the winners after trying about 10 different styles. It’s amazing what a bit of elbow grease and new hardware can do for an old piece.
The floor. Oh the floor. We have wood-look laminate that runs through our kitchen, hallway and into this bathroom. We’re planning on replacing the kitchen flooring with hardwood when we get around to renovating that whole space someday, but I’ve been dreaming of marble for the bathroom since I renovated the fireplace.
I did some research to make sure there was no asbestos lurking in the laminate or adhesive it was installed with, then cut the flooring at the entrance to the bathroom and ripped it out with a whole lotta blood, sweat and tears (seriously the worst demo job in the universe!!!!!!)
Then I prepared the subfloor and laid 6″x12″ marble tile in a large scale herringbone pattern to echo our hearth. I could not love it more and am SOOOO SO SO glad I went for it and ripped out the laminate.
I’ll be posting about this project in the next few weeks, with a tip to make it relatively affordable!
Thanks to everyone who weighed in on whether I should go with white or gray grout over on Instagram!! You were all right on with the gray!!
As much as the carpentry and tiling transformed this space, my favorite parts of this room are the photos I enlarged and framed. The pictures are a few of the beautiful places we’ve been blessed to see in this amazing world.
I wrote the location in pencil, just a very small detail in the corner of each photo. These are the frames I used; they are similar in profile to frame on the Kelly Witmer watercolor.
These pictures make me happy every time I look at them.
And….last but not least…..the Ballard Designs-inspired oyster shell mirror!
My photos do not do this justice. It deserves it’s own post and I’ll post about it soon, pinky swear.
It’s huge, I don’t know one other person in real life with one and it’s a conversation piece. Love it.
One last look at the before and after from when we moved in to today!
Crazy, right?
MANY THANKS TO MY SPONSORS
AMERICAN STANDARD for providing a fabulous self-cleaning, high efficiency, high quality toilet for this remodel (I don’t have to say that; as far as toilets go we really do think this one is awesome!)
&
MINTED for the gorgeous print!
THANK YOU ALSO
-to Linda of Calling It Home for creating and hosting the twice-yearly One Room Challenge. While I didn’t finish this room within 6 weeks, the challenge was a great motivator to get it done!
-to my readers, blog friends and Instagram buddies who cheered me along through this rocky One Room Challenge of mine! I appreciate you all so much.
-and to my amazing brother, an actual plumber, who came up and installed my brand new toilet even though I was bound and determined to do it myself (I did remove the old one!), who has taught me how to use many cool tools and walked me through many home improvement projects through the years, and who gently tells me when to smarten up and call a pro. Thanks for saving me bro!! I love you!

The flooring alone gets you the grand prize !! The room is totally georgeous !! But –since your challenge also included how you cleverly also transformed the laundry ,I for one ,think it should be included in this reveal . Come on ,give yourself credit where credit is due !!!
Lisa says
You’re so sweet – thank you Shelby! The laundry was pretty much ignored (both the clothing getting washed and that space seeing any attention in this remodel!) All I did was paint the doors and throw some new knobs on them because moving that wall on my own was a way bigger job than I anticipated! I totally wimped out on that piece of the project π
STACY CONNOLLY says
Just yesterday I was wondering! Well worth the wait! It is stunning.. Bravo! I think my favorite is the floor and molding.

Will you marry me? I really need a handy spouse.
Lisa says
I would be honored! I think Mark is about ready to trade me in for a spouse that cooks and cleans on a regular basis instead of tearing the house apart!! π

Carol @ CAD INTERIORS says
The bathroom turned out great, Lisa! The new millwork and flooring was well worth your sweat equity – turned out terrific! Self-cleaning toilet?! Yes please!
Lisa says
Thanks so much Carol! That self-cleaning toilet has been such a point of conversation around here this summer, it’s kind of funny!
sheryl says
Love the bathroom – all of it looks spectacular! The marble floors are classic! Did u go with honed marble?
I really enjoy reading your blog and love that you take the time to explain the process in detail and that you’re not afraid to do the work yourself. Someone else asked if you would marry them, can I be your second wife? lol
Lisa says
Sheryl, thank you so much for this very kind comment! π I’m so glad you don’t mind my very wordy posts! The tile I used is polished, apparently it doesn’t stain as easily as honed, but still needs to be sealed!
Kerry says
Wow! So impressed! Love EVERYTHING about it!
Lisa says
Kerry thank you so much my sweet friend!! I appreciate you stopping by to check this post out π
Pam @ Simple Details says
Oh my goodness gracious, friend!! It’s truly fabulous, and your skills blow me away! I can’t even choose a favorite element, they’re all SO good – the mirror, floor, walls, and Gentlemen’s Gray together are beautiful! Hope you’re enjoying it every time you toss in a load of laundry or take a potty break! π Hehe!
Lisa says
LOL yes I am enjoying it on those occasions π Thank you my sweet friend, always my biggest cheerleader!!! XOX
Shani says
How do you transition floor in hallway to bath? It looks likes piece of tile slanted? We have wood floors and the transition moulding in which I despise!
Lisa says
Hi Shani, I installed a piece of marble threshold between the tile and the hallway flooring. I purchased the marble threshold at a local tile shop.
Carol Stoecker says
Thanks for all the tips!! Love, love, love your marble herringbone floor! It’s on our list!
Lisa says
Thanks so much Carol! Hope you get your floor done!
