Welcome back to the 1980s!
Hannah and her friend Meghan set to work making a bunch and modeling them for me while I belted out tunes from Olivia Newton-John and Rick Springfield (Jessie's Girl is a classic! Go ahead and listen, you know you want to!) PS, I delight in embarrassing my kids with my horrible singing voice.

The 80s fashion was an eyesore, but the music was wicked awesome!
Um, where were we? Oh yes, ribbon barrettes. So fun and nostalgic to make! I taught the girls to braid the ribbon from a technique that I found deep in the recesses of my brain, but this tutorial at Wee Folk Art explains the process really well. We all felt a bit like butterfingers at first but eventually got the hang of it. And I am serious when I tell you some 80s music really helps to get into the groove of braided ribbon barrette making! I highly recommend it for any and all craft projects.
Get yourself some 1/8" ribbon and double-bar barrettes.
I had giant spools of ribbon left over from a Girl Scout project.....
...so we made some St. Paddy's Day barrettes too.
The wider 1/4" ribbon gives the barrettes this smooshed-up look that I think is cute.
Oh to be 10 again!
I hope this trip back in time brought a smile to your face!
Have a great day!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Boy have you sent me down memory lane! I used to have a bunch of those braided barrettes with long ribbons and then beads on the ends too! I loved them. I remember my favorite was a light yellow and white with sparkly clear beads...love, love, loved it!
And you are right about the music. We still enjoy it around this house! ;)
I love all the 80's flashbacks! Maybe you should open and Etsy 80's store:))
I loved the fashion
in the early 80's
when it was still
preppy, but prefer
not to think about
the rest!! Love the
cute barrettes and
the thought of you
singing along to the
{gasp} oldies! Who
ever thought that
we'd think the 80's
were the oldies?!
xx Suzanne
Oh the 80's...how we used to think we looked so good. Unfortunately, the 80s are back. At a store I recently saw cut off jeans and fanny packs being sold. Fanny packs.
Anyways, am a new follower. Thanks for commenting on my blog.

Don't tell the WW high athletic department, but I have my #18 soccer shirt from senior year. They were getting new ones for the class of '90 so I kept mine. Maybe someday one of my daughters will wear it. Kepp singing, Lisa!!!
How funny! I volunteer at my the library at my kids' school. A little girl was sporting a braided barette and I did a double take and an internal chuckle. I SO remember making these! Thanks for the post. It was a real blast from the past. I'm feeling like I should go watch Back to the Future or Footloose.
I think I rocked everyone of those 80's styles "with pride" Haha.
I had those ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color!! And several with beads on them too. :)
The 80s were a fashion nightmare but so was the early 90s grunge!!
I loved the music of the 80's. I knew and still remember every word to almost every song.
Good thing you did not have Madonna's - Like a V..... on on your blog. It is a song I would not want to explain.
But, Pat Benatar I so loved that one.
And ohhhh ABBA they were in Holland soooo popular.
But, the braided barettes... then I can tell that I grew up overseas.
We did have the barettes but different and we had strings from the roots tightly wrapped around a lock of hair. And then a bead in the end.
Thank you for this drive down memory lane...
Ohhhh Waterloo! singing(ABBA)
I had forgotten all about these. We have been to several 80's parties in the past couple of years and these would have been perfect. Oh well, next time (and I'm sure they'll be a next time).
I was such a fan of "jellies", believe it or not I thought they were comfy!!! Love those braids clips!
This was such a cute post! Love the barrettes. They turned out so cute. I am new to your blog.Glad I found it!
This post cracks me up!! I loved the 80's. I was obsessed with my jellies!! And remember t-shirt rings? Love it. Those aviator glasses are coming back in style!!
OH MY goodness! Jelly shoes? Talk about a blast from the past!? HILARIOUS!!! I love them!
OMG, those barrettes....I LOVED those! My mom made me some during my Xanadu phase!
