Kitchen Photo Wall

The wall behind our kitchen table has been a work in progress for the last 4 months.  These photos used to line the stairwell to our finished basement in our old house, and because the basement here is not finished, all these photos that we really love were just sitting in boxes.  On a whim we decided to hang some of them in the kitchen and be able to enjoy them every day.  We are loving the outcome, and the only remaining piece is a number 5 for that little empty space on the right.  I'm on the hunt for the perfect number five, for our family of five, this weekend!

We figured out the arrangement by playing with the pictures on our family room floor.  {When I say "we", I mean I rearranged them about 400 times and my husband and kids said "Yeah, that looks good" to every version.  I was a little OCD about the arrangement, it's true.}  For more inspirations on photo wall layouts, check out this and this.

In addition to our immediate family, I wanted all my beautiful nieces and nephews on here too {this was not a difficult task as there are only 5 of them.} I also wanted to combine some different sized photos - some matted, some not, for some visual interest - with our family name picture (see this post for the tutorial).

I measured, rearranged, measured and marked where each nail should go, and then banged about 7,028,837 holes in the wall trying to get the pictures to hang properly.  Yes, I am a former picture framer....but hanging a grouping is a challenge, and let me tell you right now, you can't be afraid to knock a few extra holes in your wall.

This is the wall almost finished - Mark & I love it!  {I'm still a little distressed that some pictures will not hang flush to the wall, but a little 3 M double-stick tape on the back might do the trick.}  It's fun and cheerful, and a conversation piece for everyone that comes over.  It's also a daily reminder of lots of fun times we've had as a family.  I'm so glad we put it in the kitchen despite the concensus in the design world that personal photos should be kept in personal spaces like bedrooms.  This is our home, after all, and I want our house to represent how much we cherish family.

I'm a big fan of coralling a bunch of photos into one space.  The reason it works in this house is because we don't have a lot of other busy walls.  I'm so happy that we painted the whole first floor of our new house this neutral color {Ben Moore Muslin #1037} because I absolutely adore the way art pops on it.

Oh wait - in case you don't think this crazy wall is enough - I also hung this little trio between my pantry doors -
- because I love these little baby faces!
- and because I'm too old to worry if I have "too many" photos around my house!  I love them and truth be told those little munchkins up there are my greatest works of art.

One of my big to-dos this month is to give my kitchen cabinets on the other side of this room a little facelift, so stay tuned for that project.

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!  Thanks for visiting!

Lisa, your photos look great! Isn't it funny when they say, "yes it looks great" as if to say, "finish, move on". Our families sound similar.

I like the color of the walls! Enjoy your weekend!

I host a Linky Party every week called Inspiration Friday and would love to have you join sometime!

One great trick I learned in a Pottery Barn photos book is to cut out paper the size of your frames and put an x on the paper where the hanger is. Tape to the wall and move around until you get a grouping you like. Then pound the nail through that x you made on the paper and rip the paper away and hang the frames up...no more 7,000,000 holes in the wall to putty up later!

Love this gallery wall! It's one of my favorites that I've seen in awhile, to be honest! The family name picture is genius.
